In case you’re feeling a bit blue this morning the amazing story of courage exemplified by Malala Yousafzai, the 15 year old Pakistani girl shot by the Taliban on a school bus last October, should warm your heart and brighten up your day. Malala has made her first video statement since narrowly avoiding death saying she was “getting better day by day”.
“Today you can see that I am alive. I can speak, I can see you, I can see everyone. It is just because of the prayers of people. Because all people – men, women, children – all of them have prayed for me. And because of all these prayers God has given me this new life – a second life. And I want to serve. I want to serve the people. I want every girl, every child to be educated. For that reason we have organised the Malala Fund.”

Malala was targeted by the Taliban because she promoted girls’ education and “Western Thinking”. ons at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, successfully operated to reconstruct Malala’s skull and restore her hearing.

Malala has the courage of a lion – and the independent way of being of all cats – including our very own Little Cat!

We salute all of them for their lion-hearted ways!

    Hi Jonathan and Angie,

A very inspirational and heart warming story indeed, many thanks for sharing it.

Best wishes from us all to you both,

    Matt

P.S. Love the name for your cat, ‘Little Cat’! Great name!! (haha)

  2. Yup – we could never decide on anything else – she is so not a regular name cat – too much an outdoors cat – she may be small but she still somehow manages to keep the dogs from monstering her – Isis is the worst she comes close but then thinks twice about it. We all meet up at the swimming pool where there is a lovely view and feel to the property – take time out for a cup of tea – apple and cheese is a favorite treat for us at that time and Little Cat loves cheese – maybe she thinks that where there be cheese there must surely be rats and mice! Love from us – J and A

    Hi everyone,

Yes, her story is both tragic and inspirational, standing up to the evils of radical Islam.
It has gotten a lot of press over here in the states for that very reason.
She has also gotten the support of millions here in the US.

As far as cat names are concerned, I try to find out names that suit them, If I don’t have a name already picked.
Artemis is a great name for a spayed female cat, yes I have a Artemis
Stormy, I orignally thought of Tori {Amos}, but since i finally caught her during a thunderstorm, well it suits her
Felix, for a black and white male, a given
Spooky, for a all black male ,again a no-brainer
My pet boy Sherman, a ginger tiger male, Remember Sherman and Mr. Peabody from Rocky and Bullwinkle
and of course my latest kitten Toto, inspired by Honey’s Toto.

    take care

    Dom

    Hi everyone!

Concur with the above comments, thank you for sharing.

Hahahaha…..I love the picture of Little Cat, just about as much as I love the name you given her…..perfect. I’ve always thought about writing a book about pet’s names because of the great ones I’ve heard in the past. The names seem to just bring a smile to my face. We try to name our kitties with movie names…….Nick and Nora (sadly, we lost Nicky a few years back, and Nora just recently died), Cassidy (my 3-legged baby, obviously for ‘Hop-a-Long Cassidy’), Nelson (for Nelson Eddy), Sam and Bridget (for the characters in the Maltese Falcon), our recenty kitties, Fred and Adele (for the famous brother-sister dancing team, Fred and Adele Astaire). Dom, love the names you’ve picked for your kitties….especially Spooky!

A little pat, and extra treat to Little Cat from wayyyyy across the pond,

    Kris

  5. I think all the attention has gone to Little Cats head! She is being very aloof today!

In my simple “good against evil” thinking (sorry, maybe I read too much Tolkien), people like Malala are part of what I would call “the forces of life”, and we sohuld all stand beside them against the “forces of death”! Life can be very complicated at times, but some issues are simple indeed, at least to me.
On cat names: the only pet cat I ever had was named “Kali” after the BBC documentary “Kali the lion”, an early Simon King film about the Marsh lions, centering on a partiuclarly courageous lioness. Kali was my close companion for 14 years, she posed patiently for my endelss sketching, and she even posed as a would-be Dinofelis for the cover of “The Big Cats and their Fossil Relatives” -the head proportions are those of the Pliocene sabertooth, but the coat color -and most importantly, the attitude -are those of my missed friend Kali. She passed away in 2009, and I have been unable to take another pet, her place simply cannot be taken!
    Cheers to you all!

Inspiring story and what a great picture of Little Cat – thanks for sharing!
I’ve always had cats as pets and tend to give them “people” names. My first kitty Samantha, then my all black
kitty who was my soulmate Stella. She passed away 3 years ago and I still miss her so. We also brought home
a little gray and white kitty at the same time as Stella and named her Lucy. Sadly she passed away 6 months
ago. We now have a male kitty named Henry and he has brought nothing but joy to our lives. He loves to
watch Big Cat Diary with me. He especially likes watching the cheetahs run (Amber, Kike, Fundi Honey). I
took a picture of him watching BCD and you can see Solo’s Mom in the background! Henry is my BCD buddy!
He looks just like a Russian Blue except for the eye color.
Dom, I love your tiger male’s name Sherman. What a great name! I remember Sherman and Mr. Peabody
from Rocky and Bullwinkle. I loved the show!

    Take care all,
    Sue

    Hello everyone,

When Little Cat gets full of herself, see how she reacts to you when you open a can of tuna fish in her presense.

Thanks for mentioning the Malala Fund in your initial post, I will definitely check it out.

    Kris,
Spooky was a neutered male that was a outside cat because I didn’t have room to keep him inside. He was basically tame though and would come inside to visit. Took care of his mom and his brother since they were kittens in 2007, unfortunately he was killed by a car in front of my house in Aug 2011.

    Sue,
Sherman is 6yrs old and is one of my indoor cats. Had him since he was a kitten.
I alway got a kick out of how Mr. Peabody {a dog}, called his assistant, Sherman, his “pet boy”.
He is the music lover, when I play my guitar he tries to get as close to me as physically possible.

Watched episode of Season 4 of BCD is morning. Solo as a young adult, Honey facing down an adult lion to protect her cubs and Shadow trying to hide her cubs from hyenas. great stuff.

    take care

    Dom

    Hi everyone,

Ahh, Dom, sorry to hear you lost Spooky to a car accident. All of our animals are inside, which is why we just have 6 kitties and two dogs (they all get along too). I’d LOVE to take in more, but my checkbook pretty much ‘blinks red’ when I even THINK about another kitty. That coupled with our ‘house’ (actually an apartment, but it’s rather big so we refer to it as a ‘house’) being on a street (two-ways-3-lanes-each-way) here in New Orleans which is like the chariot race in the film “Ben Hur”….if any of you have ever seen that wonderful, classic film. No way can we have outside animals…..the speed limit is technically 45 out front, but the locals don’t seem to know/or care.

    Great weekend everyone!

    Kris

  10. Dominick says:

thanks for your kind words Kris,
Always worried about Spooky being outdoors, but I only have so much room.
You want to save them all, but at least I know he had a good life for the short time he was here.

    Dom
